Review | INIKA Mineral Bronzer

Summer’s just right around the corner, we can smell and feel it in the air. I am loving this new INIKA Mineral Bronzer that I was given to review a few weeks ago. This bronzer delivers a sun-kissed glow that looks and feels natural. A little powder goes a long way.

I believe this product would be a perfect choice for those of you with sensitive or acne prone skin.

Best applied with INIKA’s Kabuki Brush which is 100% certified vegan and 100% certified cruelty free you can’t get better than that. The brush is perfect for blending in mineral powders. The brush head feels soft and silky.

The mineral bronzers come in 4 different shades to suit different skin tones.

Price Factor: 5/5

It’s about $49.99 for the bronzer which is about the same as what you would pay for a M.A.C one but way less than something made by say Dior or Chanel. There’s a substantial amount of powder in the pot. And to top that off no nasties which is what we like!

In a nut shell:

If you’re after a top up on your bronzer, I’d give INIKA’s Mineral Bronzer a go. It delivers a natural glow after application and most of all it’s easy and not messy to use.

Pictorial | In Our Backyard

Over the long weekend we were blessed with amazing weather for a change, summer is finally here on our door step. We spent a day driving around Whitford and Maraetai and took a few snaps while we were at it.

This was my backyard growing up, going to the golf club or on the boat in Pine Harbour to go fishing in the weekend. The area which I recall as being rural seems to be undergoing some urban development but not a lot has changed. I guess that’s the beauty of it all, we have the best of both worlds. As great as urbanization is for us city lovers, it’s great to be able to have the opportunity to step back from it all 20 minutes from your house.

On another note, I’ll be heading down to Queenstown for nice little getaway. I thought I wasn’t going to go away after the few too many little (and big) trips we have had this year but we somehow managed to slip this one into the calendar.

Lookbook | The Tourist

We headed out of Auckland for the day to check out a potential wedding venue. It’s not very often I get a full day on a weekend to go out and about so I had to make the most of this opportunity. We passed a few small towns and decided to stop off to grab a bit of fresh air and some tourist snaps.

Let the wedding planning officially begin!

Review | Brown All Year – Instant Spray Tan

Now let me tell you this, before I even started writing this review I had a few people (including myself) hooked on to this amazing tan. I totally know that this product is just going to spread like wildfire amongst all readers and everyone is going to want to buy themselves a bottle to try. This is all organic and is the good stuff!

Just for background knowledge, I wasn’t an instant tan fanatic before using this tan. In fact, back in the day, I was absolutely disgusted with the use of fake tans, the revolting smell and the orangey yellow colour that it leaves. I swore I would never touch that stuff. Little did I know that couple of years down the track, working full time indoors means that there’s not much time to get out and about to get recommended levels of vitamin D let alone getting a tan on.

I was sent the BrownAllYear Instant Spray Tan  as well as the Tanning Cream about 2 weeks back. For one reason or another I was drawn to the Instant Spray Tan, maybe because it looked like it was super easy to apply on with the velvet glove. I haven’t even opened up the tanning cream yet.

Also on another note the packaging is super cool. I totally didn’t expect a ‘Tanning Prescription’ to come with the product, being a pharmacist seeing this kind of stuff is awesome. And to top that off a cautionary and advisory statement of ‘Spray tanning and tanning products can be addictive they have the effect of making the person look thinner and healthier  CAUTION: may cause bouts of happiness and high self esteem.’ Totally made my day!

Nitty Gritty:

The majority of commercial spray tans contain an ingredient called DHA (dihydroxyacetone). Not a particularly good chemical for you especially when inhaled and a potential carcinogen (a agent that can cause cancer) but it is the main ingredient in most tanners.   BrownAllYear products on the other hand are different as the active ingredient in the formulation combines caramel from non GMO Cane Sugar which develops a long lasting tan and it’s also infused with moisturising agents such as aloe vera. There’s definitely no yucky fake tan smell after application which is a major plus for me.

The colour starts to develop in 4 hours and will usually last for 4-10 days. What really surprised me was the colour my skin turned. Being Asian, we have a lot of yellow tones in our skin so usually with most take tan it will further enhance the yellow and we turn oompa loompa orange (another reason why I steered clear of fake tans). BrownAllYear’s instant spray tan makes my skin glow and it is by far the most natural brown you can get in a spray tan in my opinion. My friends who also bought into this product can back me up on this one.

The ‘Tanning Prescription’ / Application Instructions :

This is super easy with the help of the velvet glove. I’d definitely recommend paying the extra few dollars for it because it means your tan will be streak free. You just spray 1 spray on to the glove then rub into the skin until dry. I usually pop the tan on before bed and it develops overnight. I would avoid wearing anything white over top during the 4 hour period, it does dry quickly but it can still stain light colours.

Price Factor:

For 100ml of the instant tanning spray is $23.50. I would definitely recommend spending the extra dollars and get the velvet glove. Yes you could probably do with another kind of glove but the velvet texture just helps it rub into the skin as oppose to just disperse the liquid. The set (glove + spray) is $33.50 which I reckon is a bargain for how great it is! BrownAllYear is a salon only product or you can get it from their website here.

In a nut shell:

The best artificial tan, super easy application and leaves a streak free finish. Looks great on all skin tones. And to top that off it’s all organic! No nasties. It’s a steal at that price and gets couriered to your doorstep.

Lookbook | Lazy Weekend

Here’s the latest. Apologies for being so lazy in uploading the look books, I’m consistently drowning in work and other things, I haven’t been buying as much as I use to. My current wardrobe is still in a suitcase. I have yet to unpack any of my things from moving house about 2 months ago.

A couple of weeks back we had a short weekend trip to Sydney. I love this city, it’s a place that you can just go to for a day or two, find good food and  great shopping.

I managed to score some goodies from Alistair Trung, an Australian designer. I love his pieces. I’d describe it as being more on the androgynous spectrum yet full of flowing layers and easy to piece with anything. I throw these pants on with a tee or blouse depending on how I feel, so they have definitely become a staple piece. My other staple look for this summer is my Karen Murrell Scarlett Blaze lipstick. See my review of them here.

Review | Karen Murrell Lipsticks

Hailed as the ‘vegeterian lipsticks‘, Karen Murrell lipsticks don’t contain any nasties yet are as equally as pigmented and easy to use as regular lipstick.

I have been fortunate enough to be given a couple of her lipsticks to try out and all of which will be or are already my staple colours for summer. My favourite has to be Scarlett Blaze , I love deep reds just to add a bit of drama to everyday make up.

Notable Ingredients:
Avocado Oil: to provide moisture, nourishment and hydration
Cinnamon: for fuller and plumper lips
Evening Primrose Oil: To soothe and moisturise
Carnauba Wax: Ensure hard-wearing due to it’s high melting point.

Comparing these lipsticks to other commercial lipsticks such as M.A.C, Revlon and Dior.

These are similarly priced to Revlon lipsticks and definitely cheaper than the other brands above. Scarlett Blaze being a darker colour is very pigmented and doesn’t need many reapplications. The lighter colours such as the Carnation Mist and Sandstorm are less pigmented compared with some heavy staining lipsticks such produced by M.A.C. They are all very moisturising upon application and the lighter colours can easily be used as a lip balm with a pop of colour. They are not as long wear as M.A.C lipsticks but I’d rather reapply the lipstick a few times a day and know that I’m not putting on anything bad on my lips than to have to scrub off lippy with ample amounts of make up remover. It is honestly very similar to the Dior lipsticks I have minus the price. With the new colours brought out for this summer, I’d definitely recommend getting one or a few of these lippys.

Price Factor:

They are about $30 dollars  and are available at selected pharmacies and health food shops. I have the new range of Karen Murrell lipsticks at my work and have been eying a lot of the colours and was so fortunate to have a few of these sent to me for review! They are also available online on the Karen Murrell Website.

In a nutshell:

These Karen Murrell lipsticks are a must have or must try for this summer. They come in a variety of bright and vibrant colours varying from browns, magentas to reds. They contain no nasties and are so affordable compared with so many other brands.

Review | Trilogy Age Proof Botanical Lightening Treatment

Lightening treatments or spot reducers are becoming more and popular as these are tell tale signs of aging or damaged skin. First founded in the Asian market , these products have been promoted in the western market as seen in the Clinique Dark Spot Corrector, one of their most popular products.

Nitty Gritty:

This treatment targets areas of pigmentation, with continual use helping to reduce and prevent the appearance of age spots, dark spots and blemish marks.

I never gave into the era of using whitening products, porcelain skin is highly admired in Asia. However, I have noticed after years of being in the sun that the odd age spot or freckle does pop up. So when using this I was particularly targeting these areas.

I definitely noticed a rather glowing and luminous finish to the skin. I felt it was great to use as a serum as I prefer a heavier moisturiser especially at night. I have used it for a couple of weeks and have already seen some improvement. What I am particularly looking forward to is the prevention side of things.

The main ingredients that make the product work include:

  • Gigawhite – a highly effective, safe and natural alternative to hydroquinone and other chemical bleaches. Gigawhite works to reduce pigmentation by inhibiting the enzyme which is responsible for making melanin (dark pigment). It can also brighten and even out skin tone.
  • Mulberry & Liqorice: Natural skin brighteners and conditioners. They also have anti-inflammatory effects .
  • Vitamin C, Kiwi, Ginko Biloba, White Tea: Anti-oxidants.
  • Silver Mica: Give the skin a luminous glow.

This is a 50ml treatment and is available in pharmacies and department stores from mid September. It’s about $48.90 a pop which isn’t all that bad considering the costs of other similar product such as the Clinique Spot Corrector which is about $128.

In a nut shell:

This product being in the ‘Age Proof’ range which is often for more mature skin can be deceiving. Standing at 24, I don’t consider myself needing anti-wrinkle or skin plumping treatments but it’s good to be prepared ahead of time when it comes to age spots. They tend to pop out between your mid 20’s to 30’s so prevention is key. This Trilogy Botanical Lightening Treatment is a great starting place for those of you who are after a natural alternative to skin bleaches or spot correctors.

Review | Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Foundation

With this Benefit hype going on in Auckland, I thought I would jump on the bandwagon with this one. I’m not usually much of a fan of over crowded Smith & Caughey beauty counters but since Benefit is such a big brand in Asia and Europe, I thought why not get in and try out one of their most renowned products. I’ve heard my family and cousins rave about Benefit products for years and years so from that I gather the brand is fairly reliable and good for Asian skin. I recently purchased their Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Foundation. I am not an avid foundation user, I probably pop on foundation once every 2 weeks if even that. In saying that there are times where I do like to keep a foundation on hand. I have been a bit lazy with foundations in the past. Working in pharmacy often mean we often get off loaded an ample amount of testers and samples. I have had a backlog of Revlon and Dior stuff that I had been using. It wasn’t bad nor was it great but it did its job. Once that ran out I believe it was time for something better.

Nitty Gritty:

This foundation is perfect for those of you who want a medium to light coverage. It does well in terms of hiding dark under eyes (though a concealer would do a better job), it seems to do a good job at evening skin tone as well. What I feel is the best is that you could go without topping up on powder wearing this foundation all day. It is oil free – so awesome for those with combination or oily skin. As said on the Benefit website, this foundation contains an Oxygen Wow Hydrating Complex to ensure adequate cellular respiration for a ‘plumping’ effect and to protect against day to day environmental stresses. It also contains very important anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C and E to help prevent signs of aging. It has a SPF 25, I am an advocate of having some sort of SPF in your day cream or foundation. It is one of the many ways you can protect your skin from aging. The foundation is also parabens free so great for those with relatively sensitive skin. The Flawless Oxygen Wow range have quite a few colours to suit different skin undertones. I decided to go a tone darker than what I am now with summer just around the corner but it is a good idea to purchase 2 foundations especially if you’re to wear them everyday, one for summer and one for winter. I got my foundation in Honey but my winter colour would be Champagne.

 Price Factor: 5/5

I got this at duty free for $57 NZD for a 30ml. I know this will last me for a good year so definitely an excellent buy for me.

In a nut shell: All in all an excellent buy I believe. I love its consistency and it doesn’t feel thick and oily at the end of a long day. It does a great job brightening the skin and evening out skin tone without the heavy feel and look.
