Gone

Here is the full outfit post. I bought this cute little dress from a boutique store near my place. It’s handmade and super cute. Stood outside for a couple of minutes to take these shots and froze my butt off, but the wind picked up the dress very nicely so it was worth it.

I am most likely going to sell this dress off as it is too big for me (fits a 8-10 NZ best). If you are interested, let me know via email (go to the contact us page) otherwise I’ll be selling it off on Walk in Wardrobe

I am also using Kevin Murphy’s Colour Bug in my hair. I was gifted this from my hair salon – Hype. I’ve had it for about 2 months before deciding to actually use it. Will make a review post about this product very soon.

As I said yesterday that this week would be a quiet buying week, I lied. This morning I bought 3 pairs of shoes and 2 dresses. It’s not everyday I make huge purchases on shoes, but I felt that 2 pairs of boots + a pair of loafers are indeed necessary. I don’t believe I am a shoe addict but I feel like I have no shoes in my wardrobe. I bought these from Urban Outfitters (by the way they are doing free shipping to NZ until the end of June – just be careful with how much you get due to NZ customs) and Wild Pair.

I have been posting up my posts on nzgirl – a popular nz fashion/food/culture website. One of the readers reminded me to pop my looks onto Lookbook (which I have had for years but have forgotten about). Please hype my look on my Lookbook and follow me!

Review: The Original Iron – Cloud 9 Straighteners

I have owned these straighteners for about 2 months now. I have only decided to do a review now just because using them once or twice won’t do you guys justice.

They are really wonderful straighteners. I have used them almost everyday since I got them and my hair doesn’t feel damaged at all.

A little background to as to what I am comparing these to. I have recently been using some very bad hair straighteners – cheap Remington ones which costed around $30. I bought them as part of a set of 3 as it came with a hair dryer and which was the only thing I really needed and it also came with curling tongs. I had also used another Remington pair (Remington S5500) which had adjustable heat settings and ceramic plates which I lost while I was overseas, so that’s why I’ve been using these bad ones.

I had also been using another pair of straighteners which my parents got for me in Hong Kong from the department store Sogo. It is an asian brand so I don’t believe you would have heard of it, but they are ceramic and have adjustable heat (and these were pretty good). I believe the brand is called ‘Princess’.

I have also used the GHD in the past though not daily.

Here is my official review of them.

Cloud 9 straighteners are created by the creators of GHD so in my opinion, these are a step up from the GHDs. They have all the good things about the GHD such as the sleek design, ceramic plates, swivel cord design but have they have added on bonus functions such as the adjustable heat settings and a super smart protective heat cover.

They take around 20 seconds to heat up to 150 degrees celsius (which is the temperature it is automatically heats up). I normally straighten my hair at this temperature. It is suitable for those with fine – medium hair , and as my hair is naturally straight, I feel I don’t need to expose it high temperatures.

Bonus features that makes this product stand out from the rest:

  • Adjustable temperatures: From 100  to 220 degrees celsius. Many other hair straighteners out there have this function too. But do they still create a straight or curly hair look at the lower temperatures? The Cloud 9’s really do straighten your hair at the lower temperatures – I always set mine to 150 degree celsius and have no problem. (bare in mind my hair is naturally straight and medium in thickness).
  • Black glossy ceramic plates: These plates are unlike any other ceramic plates. The GHD leaves you with sleek and straight hair, but the more you use these C9 straighteners, they actually make your hair GLOSSY as if there is this added shine. According to their official website the special mineral base takes 3 days to be baked on to the plates.
  • Protective heat cover & pouch: This is such a simple add on but it’s so important. It enables your straightener to cool down safely. I’ve burnt myself so many times by just standing on the straightener.
  • Rounded edges: The rounded edges makes it easier to curl and wave your hair.
  • Interchangable plugs- Since I purchased these on beautybay.com (UK based online store) , it has been fitted with the UK 3 point plug and can be easily changed to the european 2 pin plug if you have a screw driver handy. Not so useful for me here in NZ but probably an important bonus for those living in the UK and EU.

Price Factor:

I purchased these on www.beautybay.com for $140 USD (equivalent to $180 NZD- so it was a super good buy). If you had to buy it at the shops here it would be $350 -400 NZD. So it is a little more expensive than a GHD but with the added bonus features that is just inevitable. Unfortunately these are no longer available on beautybay.

My major likes about this product:

  • Adjustable temperatures
  • Added shine to my hair
  • Protective heat cover & pouch
  • Ease of use
  • Luxurious packaging.

My one and only dislike:

  • Not sure if it’s a design flaw, but there is a hole/ slot by the hinge and when the straighteners open up, it straightens and the hole closes, if my hand is on top of this trap, it clamps my skin (and it really hurts). Not a major thing,  but just annoying sometimes.

In a nut shell, if you are a reading my review because you are debating on whether to purchase a high end hair straightener or to buy a cheap one and replace it 1-2 years later, let me convince you to purchase a pair of Cloud 9 hair straighteners. I have been let down by so many pairs of Remington, Vidal Sassoon straighteners, they never really work well to start with and with wear and tear they go down hill even more. And think about it, if you buy $100 straighteners every year (which is what I have been doing in the past), in about 2-3 years you’ve accumulated enough money to buy a good straightener which would last hopefully more than 3 years and straightens well in the first place. You do the math.

However, if you are debating between getting a GHD or a Cloud 9 straightener, let me convince you to get the Cloud 9. It is only a little bit extra in terms of cost, but there is so much more flexibility especially if you have fine/medium hair, dry or damaged hair, the adjustable heat settings is so good for your hair.  And the plates definitely gives it that extra shine so give it the salon finish look without the need to use product!

Hope this review has been helpful. I know it is important to get an unbiased perspective of products prior to purchase as these are relatively expensive and not all salons use them, it’s really hard to get a feel of them. Many reviewers have been given their cloud 9 straighteners for FREE so their reviews could be just a tad bias.

Although I do have naturally straight hair, these straightener have done wonders to my hair to shape my bob nicely in the morning, minimise fly aways and obviously styling it. I’m sure the price you pay for them will reflect what the quality of the straighteners.

My Haircare Regimen – Wella Professionals Brillance for Coloured Hair

I have highly emphasized the importance of having a good skincare regimen and the power of good products, so why should it be any different for your hair?

Most people on average would probably not splurge or spend over the average supermarket/drug store prices on hair products because there’s not enough awareness out there regarding the importance of quality ingredients in hair product. But did you know that salon hair products do not necessarily need to be that costly? And if you have a good skincare regimen why would you subject your hair to one of lesser quality?

I began as a usual supermarket shampoo user, I used Pantene, Dove, Tresemme and they were very cheap. This was until I did a bit of hair modeling, subjected my hair to colour, blow dry after blow dry, hours of straightening and curling. If I had continue to use supermarket shampoo my hair would have fried and I would probably have no hair left.

After dozens of bleaches and hair colours with my hair still being partly blonde, my hairdresser and I can say that my hair is still very healthy and strong.

My current hair regime includes The Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo + Conditioner + Hair mask.

This range of products are excellent for people with coloured hair (especially bleached). The reason I say this is because once I had my hair completely bleached and I didn’t use a silver shampoo and used the Wella SP colour save, it actually made my hair an orangey yellow colour once the toner wore off. Not a good look.

This product is very gentle on coloured hair and contains what they call ‘diamond powder’ which gives off this gorgeous shine after a wash. It is also a very light shampoo so doesn’t weigh your hair down or anything. I’ve had some iffy experiences with salon shampoo that made my hair more oily and flat.

My usual routine would be to shampoo twice. If you haven’t already noticed, when you’re at the salon they tend to shampoo twice then condition your hair. I have asked my hairdresser why this is the case and turns out the first shampoo is to get rid of any dirt and grease in your hair and only after that will your hair benefit from all the added goodies in the shampoo – whether it be volumising, sleek & shine etc.. And by doing this you effectively require less product for the job to be done. Doing this myself, I have definitely noticed that my hair doesn’t look oily even if I don’t wash it everyday and by doing the second wash my hair feels smoother, shinier, less split ends and nicer.

I also alternate the mask with the conditioner since the mask makes my hair feels a lot tamer, smoother and more hydrated.

I have also learned to avoid washing my hair everyday (despite this was quite difficult to start off with). I have been told by my hairdresser that there is no need to wash your hair everyday unless you have oily hair as this strips the natural oils and if you have coloured your hair – it’ll wreck the colour faster (I’ve had personal experience in this aspect). So I have taken on the advice and this definitely does affect the amount of hair product you use on your hair too!

Hope this review has overall helped you with your haircare regimen. And to top it off, the cost of these products are not overwhelming expensive.

Price Factor: 5/5 I bought this set at the salon (200mL shampoo, condition, mask + small hair spray) for a whopping $56 NZD. Dividing that up by 3 full sized hair products it’s only around $19 dollars a bottle. I have used these products for a good 5 months and still have over 1/3 left.

Will later review my the Sebastian range of products + the Wella SP Hydrate range that I just purchased.

Just so you would believe me, I have included a collage of the numerous hair transformations I’ve had in the past 2 years (bare in mind my hair use to be black)
